Monasterio de San Isidoro del Campo

Monasterio de San Isidoro del Campo is a fortified monastery in Santiponce, founded in 1301 by Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, with twin churches and 15th-century Mudéjar wall paintings.

About Monasterio de San Isidoro del Campo

The monastery stands on the southern edge of Santiponce, 1.3 km from Itálica. Guzmán el Bueno, defender of Tarifa, and his wife María Alonso Coronel founded it in 1301 where tradition placed the tomb of San Isidoro. Hieronymites arrived in 1432; in the 16th century some monks joined a reformist circle, and Casiodoro de Reina fled to translate the Bible. It became a monument in 1872.

The fortified complex has two adjoining Gothic-Mudéjar churches. One holds a carved altarpiece by Juan Martínez Montañés (1609–1613) and his praying figures of the founders. Around the Claustro de los Muertos is a refectory with a late 15th-century Last Supper, and the Patio de los Evangelistas keeps wall paintings of about 1431–1436, among Spain's finest Mudéjar murals.

Entry is free with no booking for individuals; groups of up to 30 must reserve by email. The site has no guided visits of its own, though private guides lead Sunday tours. Allow 45 minutes to an hour; entry stops 30 minutes before closing. Most areas are at ground level, with some steps and uneven floors. Buses M-170A and M-170B serve Santiponce.

From mid-September to mid-June it opens Tuesday to Thursday 10:00–15:00, Friday and Saturday 10:00–19:00 and Sunday 10:00–14:30; in summer, mornings only. It is closed on Mondays. See Itálica first, while it is cooler.
