Province of Andalucía

Seville

Seville is a city where history and modern life intersect along the Guadalquivir River, offering a rich tableau for visitors to explore.

Why visit Seville

Seville province runs from the oak-covered hills of the Sierra Morena in the north, across the broad and fertile valley of the Guadalquivir, to the rolling wheat fields and olive groves of the south. At its heart is the Andalusian capital, a city of grand monuments, orange-scented squares and flamenco, but the wider province rewards those who look beyond it. Historic towns such as Carmona, Osuna and Écija preserve Roman, Moorish and Baroque layers, while the marshes of the lower Guadalquivir and the forests of the Sierra Norte offer quiet countryside. Good road and rail links make it a natural base for travellers who want headline sights alongside slower rural Andalucía.

Main attractions in Seville

In the capital, the Real Alcázar, the cathedral with its Giralda tower and the Archivo de Indias share UNESCO World Heritage status, while Plaza de España and the Metropol Parasol frame a city best explored on foot. Just outside, the Roman ruins of Itálica lie in Santiponce, and Carmona keeps its Roman necropolis and fortified gateways. Further east, Osuna’s collegiate church and Écija’s Baroque bell towers make rewarding day trips. Walkers and cyclists head for the Sierra Norte Natural Park, with its cork oak and chestnut woods around Constantina and Cazalla de la Sierra and the rock formations of the Cerro del Hierro, while birdwatchers seek out the rice fields and wetlands along the lower Guadalquivir. Round it off with tapas in Triana, the Holy Week processions, the April Fair and the province’s famous manzanilla and gordal olives.
