Huelva

Huelva is a gateway to Andalusia’s Atlantic coast with rich maritime heritage and historic significance.

Why visit Huelva

Huelva is Andalucía’s westernmost province, wedged between Portugal and Seville, and it packs remarkable contrasts into a compact area. In the south, broad Atlantic beaches and estuaries lead to Doñana, one of Europe’s great wetlands. The centre is old mining country, where the Río Tinto runs red through a scarred, almost lunar landscape, while the north climbs into the wooded Sierra de Aracena, heartland of acorn-fed ibérico ham. Running through it all is the story of 1492, when Columbus sailed from Palos. Less visited than its neighbours, Huelva rewards nature lovers, food lovers and travellers who prefer authentic towns to big resorts.

Main attractions in Huelva

History centres on the Lugares Colombinos around La Rábida and Palos, the Moorish walls of Niebla and the mining heritage of the Parque Minero de Riotinto. Doñana National Park can be explored on guided tours from Almonte and El Rocío, scene of the great Pentecost pilgrimage, while the Marismas del Odiel attract flamingos and spoonbills. Up in the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Natural Park, walkers follow chestnut-shaded paths between villages, and Aracena’s Gruta de las Maravillas lies beneath the castle. The coast suits surfing and kitesurfing at Punta Umbría, sailing on the Río Piedras and cycling along greenways, and Ayamonte looks across the Guadiana to Portugal. Jabugo ham, white prawns, Condado wines from the Zalema grape and the summer Fiestas Colombinas complete the picture.
