Jaén
Jaen is a historic city known for its extensive olive oil production and Renaissance architecture.
Why visit Jaén
Jaén is Andalucía’s northern gateway, where the road from Madrid drops through the Despeñaperros pass into a vast landscape of olive groves rolling across the Guadalquivir valley. Those trees give the province its identity and some of the world’s most prized extra virgin olive oil. Between the groves rise castle-crowned towns, a legacy of centuries as a frontier between Christian and Moorish kingdoms, and the Renaissance jewels of Úbeda and Baeza. To the east, rugged limestone sierras hold the source of the Guadalquivir and deep, forested valleys. Away from the main tourist trail, Jaén suits travellers who love architecture, wild mountains, olive oil and quiet authenticity.
Main attractions in Jaén
Úbeda and Baeza, a joint UNESCO World Heritage Site, are the cultural highlight, with palaces, churches and squares by Andrés de Vandelvira, who also designed Jaén’s great cathedral. The capital adds the Arab baths beneath the Palacio de Villardompardo and the Castillo de Santa Catalina above the city, while Alcalá la Real’s Fortaleza de la Mota and Baños de la Encina’s Moorish castle recall the old frontier. The Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park offers hiking along the Río Borosa, wildlife watching for ibex, deer and griffon vultures, and kayaking on the Tranco reservoir. Sierra de Andújar is home to the Iberian lynx, and the Vía Verde del Aceite is popular with cyclists. Oil tastings at olive mills, pipirrana and the Romería de la Virgen de la Cabeza in April round out a visit.
