Museo Íbero, Jaén
A museum of the pre-Roman Iberian peoples on Jaén's Paseo de la Estación, opened in 2017, holding the sculptures of Cerrillo Blanco at Porcuna; permanent galleries are nearing completion.
About Museo Íbero, Jaén
The Museo Íbero in Jaén, first planned as an international museum of Iberian art, is devoted to the pre-Roman Iberian peoples who lived in southern and eastern Spain from about the 7th to the 1st century BC. It stands on Paseo de la Estación, on the site of the city's former prison, in a large contemporary building by the Spanish architects EDDEA.
Jaén province is the natural home for such a museum: it holds hundreds of Iberian archaeological sites, and the museum keeps the pre-Roman collection of the provincial museum. The stars are the sculptural groups from Cerrillo Blanco at Porcuna, including the famous warrior with double armour from the 5th century BC, and from the sanctuary of El Pajarillo at Huelma.
The museum opened in December 2017 with a temporary exhibition built around four figures, a lady, a prince, a hero and a goddess, and has since staged changing shows. The permanent galleries have opened in stages, so check what is on display before you go.
It is closed on Mondays. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons in Jaén, whose summers are very hot; come in the morning, and combine the visit with the cathedral and old town.

Nearby places to visit
Within walking distance, the Museum of Popular Arts and Customs of Jaén (700 m) occupies the Palacio de Villardompardo, above the city's Arab baths, and shows the traditional crafts and rural life of the province, a good counterpoint to the ancient world of the Iberians. For a longer day out, Linares lies about 38 km to the north, where two very different musicians have museums a short walk apart. The Raphael Museum of Linares (38 km) is devoted to the singer born in the town, and the Andrés Segovia Museum (38 km) in the Palacio de los Orozco honours the classical guitarist, who is buried in its crypt.
