Málaga
Malaga is a bustling Andalusian city known for its historical depth and Mediterranean allure.
Why visit Málaga
Málaga is the most varied of Andalucía’s provinces and the easiest to reach. Its airport puts you on the Costa del Sol within minutes, and the mild climate makes it a genuine year-round destination, with winter days often warm enough to eat outside. The beaches are only half the story, though: an hour inland the coast gives way to whitewashed hill villages, olive groves, limestone peaks and deep gorges. The capital has reinvented itself as one of Spain’s leading museum cities, so you can pair a few days of art, tapas and nightlife with a road trip through Ronda, Antequera and the mountains, all without long drives.
Main attractions in Málaga
In the city, the Moorish Alcazaba and Gibralfaro castle look down on a Roman theatre, the cathedral and the Picasso Museum in the artist’s home town, joined by the Centre Pompidou and the Carmen Thyssen collection. Inland, Ronda’s Puente Nuevo spans a dramatic gorge, while Antequera’s dolmens and the karst landscape of El Torcal share UNESCO World Heritage status. Nature lovers can walk the Caminito del Rey through the Gaitanes gorge, explore the Sierra de las Nieves National Park or descend into the Nerja Caves; El Chorro is one of Europe’s best-known rock-climbing areas, and the Gran Senda de Málaga long-distance trail loops around the whole province. Add dozens of golf courses along the coast, Holy Week processions, the August Feria, sardine espetos grilled on the beach and sweet Málaga wine.
