Interactive Music Museum
Málaga's interactive music museum, MIMMA, in the Palacio del Conde de las Navas north of the cathedral, displays around 400 instruments, many of which visitors can play.
About Interactive Music Museum
The Museo Interactivo de la Música de Málaga, known as MIMMA, occupies the Palacio del Conde de las Navas on Calle Beatas, in the old centre a few streets north of the cathedral. It grew from a private collection of more than 1,000 instruments from different periods, countries and cultures, first shown near the port in the early 2000s before moving to this palace in 2013.
Around 400 instruments are on display across nine rooms, from the origins of music and the physics of sound to world music, mechanical instruments and the history of recorded sound. The Andalusian room covers verdiales, flamenco and Málaga's piano-making past, and includes a luthier's workshop donated by the Bellido family of Granada. The house rule is printed on the walls: 'Se ruega tocar – Please play'. In the red rooms you can try many instruments yourself, often with short films explaining how.
Interpretation is largely in English, and lifts link the floors. The museum also hosts concerts and shows.
It opens daily, with shorter hours on Mondays. Come on a weekday morning, before school groups and afternoon crowds fill the interactive rooms; on a hot July or August afternoon it is a cool refuge.

MIMMA sits in a compact cluster of museums. The Flamenco Museum (100 m), run by the Peña Juan Breva on Calle Ramón Franquelo, holds guitars, posters and recordings from Málaga's flamenco history, and the Málaga Holy Week Museum (200 m) shows the processional art of the city's Holy Week brotherhoods. Towards the Alcazaba, the Málaga Museum (400 m) fills the Palacio de la Aduana with fine art and archaeology. On the port's Muelle 2, the Sea Museum Alborania (700 m) is closed while it is rebuilt as the Museo Alborán, and Playa La Malagueta (1 km) is the closest beach.
