Flamenco Museum

Run by the Peña Juan Breva, founded in 1958, this museum in central Málaga holds over 5,000 flamenco pieces, including a record library of more than 2,500 recordings.

About Flamenco Museum

The Museo de Arte Flamenco is run by the Peña Juan Breva, a flamenco club founded in 1958 and often described as the oldest in the world, at Calle Ramón Franquelo 4 in Málaga's historic centre, near the Plaza de la Constitución. The peña is named after Juan Breva, the stage name of Antonio Ortega Escalona (1844–1918) of Vélez-Málaga, who popularised the malagueña and became the first flamenco singer to perform for the royal family.

The collection runs to more than 5,000 pieces. Its core is a record library of over 2,500 flamenco recordings going back to the 19th century, among the most important in Spain, with jukeboxes, gramophones and an 1889 Edison phonograph made by Bettini of New York, still with its cylinders. There are more than 20 guitars, some over 200 years old, plus posters, flamenco costumes, paintings and photographs. The building also holds a documentation centre and a tapas bar.

The museum opens in the mornings only, and a small donation is suggested rather than a fixed fee. The peña's Colmao del Museo stages live cante, guitar and dance on Friday nights.

Any season works for this indoor visit. Come mid-morning for the museum, and return on a Friday evening for the live show.
