Bajo Guadalquivir

Bajo Guadalquivir is an agricultural and natural area in Seville known for its fertile lands and river landscapes.

Why visit Bajo Guadalquivir

The Bajo Guadalquivir lies in the south of Seville province, where the river spreads into flat, fertile farmland and the first marshes of the great estuary that leads to Doñana. Its seven towns include Utrera, Lebrija, Los Palacios y Villafranca and Las Cabezas de San Juan, places better known to Andalusians than to tourists. Rice paddies, cotton fields and tomato crops share the plain with cattle ranches raising fighting bulls and horses, while the skies are full of herons, storks and ducks. Above all, this is one of the cradles of flamenco, with family dynasties of singers and guitarists. It suits flamenco lovers, birdwatchers and travellers who enjoy authentic market towns off the usual routes.

Main attractions in Bajo Guadalquivir

Utrera, with its castle, the Gothic church of Santa María de la Mesa and the shrine of Consolación, is the liveliest town, and its Potaje Gitano each June is one of the oldest flamenco festivals in Spain. Lebrija, birthplace of the Renaissance scholar Antonio de Nebrija, author of the first grammar of the Spanish language, hosts the Caracolá flamenco festival in summer. Los Molares keeps a compact medieval castle, and Las Cabezas de San Juan is where Rafael del Riego launched his liberal uprising in 1820. Nature lovers can explore the Brazo del Este wetlands, a protected area where purple swamphens and glossy ibis feed among the reeds, while level farm tracks suit cycling and horse riding. Taste Utrera’s mostachones sweets, Los Palacios tomatoes, rice from the marshes and stews made with local beef.
