Mercado de la Encarnación
Mercado de la Encarnación is a covered market of 40 stalls at street level beneath the Metropol Parasol in central Seville, reopened in December 2010 on the square's historic market site.
About Mercado de la Encarnación
Plaza de la Encarnación has been a market square since the Convento de la Encarnación was demolished in 1810, during the French occupation, and a food market was built in its place. That market was later pulled down and stallholders spent years in temporary premises. The present market, with 40 stalls, opened on 19 December 2010 on the ground floor of the Metropol Parasol, the timber structure by the German architect Jürgen Mayer inaugurated in 2011.
The stalls mix fish and shellfish, meat, fruit and vegetables, with a few selling jewellery and accessories. A bar inside serves tapas and drinks, and more bars and terraces line the plaza around the Setas. It is compact, better for picking up fruit, olives or fish than for a long browse.
The market opens Monday to Saturday from 08:00 to 15:00, never in the afternoon or on Sundays. It is a 12-minute walk north of the cathedral, at street level, with no parking of its own. It suits visitors combining the Setas with some shopping, and self-caterers staying in the centre.
Come between 09:00 and 12:00, when stalls are fully stocked; by 14:00 many are packing up. Pair it with the Antiquarium below and the walkway on top of the Setas, best at sunset. Bring cash for small purchases.
