Mercado del Arenal

Mercado del Arenal is a covered market completed in 1947 to designs by Juan Talavera y Heredia in Seville's Arenal district, 200 m from the bullring, with fish, meat and produce stalls.

About Mercado del Arenal

The Mercado del Arenal occupies the site of the Convento del Pópulo, a prison in the 19th century. Juan Talavera y Heredia designed the present building, completed in 1947, as one block of flats, council offices and an inner market; it was one of 14 markets built in the province of Seville between 1939 and 1959 and was reformed in 1974. Parallel halls with round arches are lit by glazed roof panels, and tiled altarpieces of the Esperanza de Triana and the Virgen de la Caridad decorate the outer walls.

Stalls cover the everyday range: fish and shellfish, meat and poultry, Iberian ham and chacinas, fruit and vegetables, plus organic and vegan food shops. Several bars inside serve coffee, beer, wine and tapas at the counter.

The market opens Monday to Friday 09:00–15:00 and 17:30–20:30, and Saturday 09:00–15:00; it is closed on Sundays. It is a 10-minute walk west of the cathedral, and an underground car park open 24 hours serves the market. It suits travellers staying in the centre who want to stock a holiday kitchen.

Come on a weekday morning before 11:00 for the best choice at the fish counters; the afternoon session is quieter and handy for buying dinner. Bring cash for small stalls, and pair the visit with the bullring and the river.
