Real Maestranza Bullring, Seville
The Real Maestranza is Seville's 12,000-seat bullring on the riverside Paseo de Colón, built in stages between 1749 and 1881 and still the stage for the April Fair bullfights.
About Real Maestranza Bullring, Seville
The Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza stands in El Arenal beside the Guadalquivir, 500 m west of the cathedral. Built in stages from 1749 to 1881, which explains its slightly irregular oval, it belongs to the Real Maestranza de Caballería, a noble guild founded for cavalry training. It seats about 12,000 people and hosts one of the best-known bullfighting seasons during the April Fair.
The visit covers the sand arena, the stands and the Puerta del Príncipe, through which successful matadors are carried out on supporters' shoulders. Exhibition rooms display paintings, posters, costumes and objects from the guild's collections, and an audio guide explains the building and its history. No animals are involved in the visit.
Tickets cost €12, €7 for students aged 17–25 and ages 12–16, and €4 for children aged 7–11, including the audio guide, online or at the ticket office. From 1 November visits run daily 09:00–19:30; on bullfight days they end at 15:00. Allow 45 minutes to an hour. The stands involve steps, so wheelchair access is limited; check with the venue first.
Mornings are quietest. Bullfights, mainly during the April Fair and in spring and early autumn, shorten visiting hours, so check the calendar. Bullfighting divides opinion; the façade on Paseo de Colón can be admired from outside.
