Mercado de Triana

Mercado de Triana is the covered market on Seville's Plaza del Altozano, rebuilt in 2001 over the ruins of the Castillo de San Jorge, with about 100 food stalls and tapas bars.

About Mercado de Triana

Mercado de Triana stands on the site of the Castillo de San Jorge, seat of the Inquisition from 1481 and in ruins by 1800. The council built a market here in 1823 to a design by the military architect Tomás de Escacena y Anaya. Today's hall opened in 2001: about 4,000 m² with roughly 100 stalls along straight aisles. Castle walls and an Almohad cemetery found during the works are shown in the Castillo de San Jorge interpretation centre, open since 2009.

Stalls sell fruit and vegetables, fish and shellfish, meat, Iberian ham and chacinas, bread, olives and pickles, spices and tinned fish. Bars and small restaurants serve salmorejo, croquetas, fried fish and other Seville tapas, and the building also has a cooking school.

Shops open Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to about 14:30. The bars open Monday to Saturday 09:00–17:00 and 18:00–midnight, and Sundays and holidays 10:00–17:00. It is a 12-minute walk from the cathedral across the Puente de Isabel II, with an underground car park beside the market. The modern hall has level aisles. It suits food lovers, families and anyone self-catering in Seville.

Come on a weekday morning between 10:00 and 12:00, when the fish counters are full; Saturday midday is busiest at the bars. Fish choice is thinner on Mondays. Bring cash for small stalls and ask for ham to be vacuum-packed.

Nearby places to visit

Mercado de Triana sits at the foot of the Puente de Isabel II, with several of Seville's main sights across the river. Over the bridge, the Mercado del Barranco (250 m) fills a 19th-century iron fish hall and the Mercado del Arenal (350 m) is the centre's everyday market. The Real Maestranza Bullring, Seville (400 m) and the Naval Museum Torre del Oro (700 m) stand by the river, and the Seville Cathedral and the Giralda (900 m) is a 12-minute walk. On the Triana side, Calle Betis and Calle Pureza are good for tapas.
