Mercado del Barranco

Mercado del Barranco is a gastronomic market in a 19th-century iron fish hall on the Guadalquivir by the Puente de Isabel II, relaunched in 2024 with nine food and drink counters.

About Mercado del Barranco

The Lonja del Barranco was built in the 19th century as a fish exchange on the Guadalquivir beside the Triana bridge, for fishermen bringing their catch from Huelva; its iron structure is traditionally credited to Gustave Eiffel. In the mid-2010s it became a gourmet market of about 20 rented stalls. It closed in July 2024 and reopened that September after a refurbishment of around €2 million, with more than 2,500 m² and nine concepts run by the operator.

The counters include a classic Andalusian bar, an Iberian ham bar, seafood and rice, Asian dishes, burgers, focaccias, ice cream, pastries and coffee. Seafood comes from the Isla Cristina fish auctions and prawns from Sanlúcar. Waiters bring dishes from any counter to your table, so a group can share octopus salpicón, ham and rice.

It opens daily from 12:00, with kitchens working non-stop until midnight, and until 01:00 on Saturday. It is a 10-minute walk from the cathedral, near the Plaza de Armas bus station, with no car park of its own. Tables can be booked online. It suits families, groups and anyone eating outside Spanish mealtimes.

Come for a late lunch from 14:00, or after 21:00 to eat at the Seville hour; weekday afternoons are quietest. In warm weather ask for a terrace table facing the river, and book for Friday and Saturday nights. It is for eating, not shopping.
