Itálica Roman City
Itálica, at Santiponce 8 km north-west of Seville, was the first Roman city in Hispania, founded in 206 BC, and keeps an amphitheatre built under Hadrian for 25,000 spectators.
About Itálica Roman City
Itálica lies on the edge of Santiponce, 8 km north-west of Seville. Founded in 206 BC by Scipio for veterans of his Italian troops, it was the first Roman city in Hispania and the birthplace of the emperors Trajan and Hadrian. Hadrian added a new quarter and an amphitheatre for 25,000 spectators, 160 by 137 metres. The Junta de Andalucía runs it as an archaeological ensemble.
Grid streets lead past the Houses of the Birds, the Planetarium and Neptune, with their mosaic floors, and the Traianeum, a temple to Trajan measuring 108 by 80 metres. In the amphitheatre you can walk into the arena, look into its central pit and explore the stands; it was the Dragonpit in Game of Thrones. The Roman theatre in Santiponce keeps the same hours.
Entry is free for EU citizens with ID and €1.50 for others; only groups of ten or more must book. Allow two to three hours. Paths are unpaved and uneven, with steps around the amphitheatre, so wheelchair users may manage only part of the route. There is little shade for children. Buses M-170A and M-170B run from Seville's Plaza de Armas, and there is a car park at the entrance.
From 21 June to 20 September it closes at 15:00, so arrive at 09:00. Spring and autumn are best. Winter hours are Tuesday to Saturday 09:00–18:00 and Sundays 09:00–15:00; it is closed on Mondays.
