Casa de Pilatos

Casa de Pilatos is the Seville palace of the Dukes of Medinaceli, built mainly in the 15th and 16th centuries and lined with around 150 designs of 1530s tiles by Diego and Juan Pulido.

About Casa de Pilatos

Casa de Pilatos stands on Plaza de Pilatos, ten minutes' walk from the cathedral. It was built mainly in the 15th and 16th centuries by the Enríquez de Ribera family, whose links with Italy brought Genoese marble and Renaissance taste, with Romantic touches added in the 19th century. A national monument since 1931, it is still the home of the Dukes of Medinaceli.

The main courtyard has a fountain, marble columns, carved plasterwork and classical statues, including Athena and a 2nd-century Roman Fortuna. Rooms and the grand staircase are lined with 1530s azulejos in around 150 designs. Two gardens open off the house, and the upper floor has family rooms and a ceiling painted by Francisco Pacheco, Velázquez's teacher.

The ground floor costs €12 and the upper floor €6 more; children up to 11 go free, as do visitors with a disability over 65%. The ticket includes a guide or audio guide in seven languages. No timed booking system is published for individual visitors. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours. The ground floor and gardens are largely level, while the upper floor is up stairs. Parking is very limited.

Spring and autumn are most comfortable, with the gardens at their best in April and May. Arrive at the 09:00 opening or after 16:00 to beat tour groups. Film fans may know the courtyard from Knight and Day.
