El Rinconcillo
Seville's oldest bar, serving drinks on Calle Gerona since 1670 and owned by the De Rueda family since 1858, known for espinacas con garbanzos and bills chalked on the counter.
About El Rinconcillo
El Rinconcillo dates its licence to 1670, which makes it the oldest working bar in Seville. It began as a tavern at number 40 of Calle Gerona, beside the church of Santa Catalina, and in 1858 the De Rueda family bought the property; Carlos and Javier de Rueda run it today. The ground floor keeps its dark wooden counter, bottle shelves and tiled walls, and the upper floor is a sit-down restaurant with its own menu.
The tapa to order is espinacas con garbanzos, spinach and chickpeas thickened with a majado of fried bread, garlic, cumin and paprika, a dish with Moorish and Lenten roots. Other classics are pavía de bacalao (salt cod fried in batter), croquetas, carrillada ibérica (braised pork cheeks) and bacalao con tomate, plus jamón ibérico cut at the counter. Drink manzanilla, fino or a small beer; your tab is chalked on the wood.
The bar opens daily from 13:00 to about 01:30 and closes the first half of August. Tapas cost about €3–5 and raciones €10–20 (2026), so a tapas round with drinks is €15–30 per person. The bar is walk-in only; book the upstairs restaurant by phone. Standing room is tight. It suits anyone who wants old Seville rather than modern tapas.
Arrive at 13:00 or just after 20:00 to find space at the counter before the lunch rush at about 14:30 and the evening crowd from 21:30. Spinach and chickpeas taste best in the cooler months and in Lent. Keep wet glasses off the chalk marks: they are your bill.
