Casa Román
Ham tavern on Plaza de los Venerables in Santa Cruz, opened in 1934 by Román Castro as a grocer's and taberna and specialised in jamón ibérico de bellota since the 1970s.
About Casa Román
Román Castro opened Casa Román in 1934 as an ultramarinos, a grocer's, with a taberna attached, on the small square in front of the 17th-century Hospital de los Venerables. From the 1970s it specialised in acorn-fed ibérico ham, still its calling card. Inside, the style is intact: a wooden bar, hams overhead and wall paintings by the artist José Palomar. It remains family-run.
Start with jamón ibérico de bellota carved by hand, or the taquitos de Román, ham in cubes. Ham also goes into huevos fritos camperos con jamón y patatas (fried eggs with ham and chips), croquetas and habitas (baby broad beans). Other dishes are espinacas con garbanzos, patatas aliñadas con melva (dressed potatoes with frigate tuna), cazón en adobo, solomillo ibérico al whisky and cola de toro. Desserts include orange flan and rice pudding.
Open daily 13:00–17:00 and 20:00–24:00. A ración of jamón ibérico de bellota cost about €24 in recent reviews; plan on €25–40 per person with wine (2025). Book on +34 954 228 483, especially for the terrace on the square. It is 230 m from the Alcázar.
Lunch from 14:00 is busiest; arrive at 13:00 for a terrace table. On summer evenings the square is cooler after 21:00. Pair the ham with a fino or manzanilla, and visit the Hospital de los Venerables opposite, which holds Velázquez paintings.
