Freiduría Puerta de la Carne

Seville's oldest freiduría, opened in 1928 as a family fishmonger's by the Murillo Gardens, still frying adobo, cod and shrimp fritters to sell by weight in paper cones.

About Freiduría Puerta de la Carne

The business began in 1928, while Seville prepared for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, when a local family opened a fish shop in the Puerta de la Carne quarter, named after the old city gate where meat entered. Fish unsold by the afternoon was fried and sold by weight wrapped in paper, and the takeaway trade outlived the fish counter. The tiled corner shop stands beside the Murillo Gardens.

Order a cartucho, a paper cone of 250 g, or by the kilo. Classics are adobo (dogfish marinated in vinegar, cumin and oregano, then fried), bacalao (salt cod), boquerones en adobo, chipirones (baby squid), chocos (cuttlefish), huevas de merluza (hake roe) and tortillitas de camarones, crisp shrimp fritters. Pescado variado lets you try several; tomates aliñados, dressed tomatoes, are the usual side.

The shop opens daily for lunch, about 13:00–17:00, and in the evening from about 19:30 to midnight. Prices per 250 g run from €6.75 for squid to €12 for mixed fish (2026), so two people eat well for €25–35. There is no booking; queue at the counter or phone your order on +34 954 411 159. It suits a quick, cheap meal or a picnic.

Lunch from 14:00 and summer evenings bring the longest queues; mid-afternoon is quieter. Eat the fish straight away while it is hot and crisp. Adobo and tortillitas de camarones are what Sevillanos order most.
