About Atalaya Golf & Country Club
Atalaya Golf & Country Club is a 36-hole club on the Avenida del Coral in Estepona, at the eastern end of the municipality close to San Pedro de Alcántara. It opened in 1968 with the Old Course, designed by the German architect Bernhard von Limburger, which makes it one of the oldest clubs on the coast.
Von Limburger was responsible for 74 courses across Europe, but Atalaya is his only one in Spain. The Old Course has parkland fairways framed by mature eucalyptus and flowering shrubs, strategically placed bunkers and subtly contoured, elevated greens that reward a good short game. The New Course, added in 1990 to a design by Paul Krings, is a more secluded and adventurous layout. Unlike many clubs on the coast, Atalaya was founded as a golf club rather than as a property development, so housing barely intrudes on either course.
The club's academy, built in 1998, includes a full-length practice hole, and a café beside the Old Course's 10th tee, which forms its roof, serves as a halfway house. Members come from some 36 nationalities.
Autumn and spring offer the best conditions, and winter is popular with northern European golfers. In summer, book the earliest tee times to avoid the afternoon heat.

Atalaya sits among some of the coast's oldest courses. Real Club de Golf Guadalmina (1 km) dates from 1959, when Javier Arana laid out its South Course, and for a swim Playa de Casasola (1 km) is a long sandy beach with clear water. San Pedro Golf Club (2 km) is a small practice venue with driving ranges and putting greens on the edge of San Pedro de Alcántara, while El Paraíso Golf (2 km) is a par-71 course that Gary Player designed in 1973. Tramores Golf Club (3 km), in Benahavís, adds another option nearby. All are within a few minutes' drive along the A-7.
