About Club de Golf Finca Cortesín
Finca Cortesín Golf Club lies in the hills of Casares, on the western Costa del Sol between Estepona and Sotogrande, part of a luxury hotel estate a short way inland from the coast. Cabell B. Robinson, a former associate of Robert Trent Jones, designed the course, which opened in 2006 over about 72 hectares on the side of a valley.
It quickly became a tournament venue. Finca Cortesín hosted the Volvo World Match Play Championship in 2009, 2011 and 2012, won by Ross Fisher, Ian Poulter and Nicolas Colsaerts, and in September 2023 it staged the Solheim Cup, the first in Spain, where Europe retained the trophy after a 14-14 tie.
The par-72 layout stretches to more than 7,300 yards from the back tees. Fairways are generous at the landing areas, but the ground is hilly, native scrub lines many holes and the greens are fast and heavily sloped. The downhill par-4 4th, curling round a lake, is often picked out as the best hole. There is a Jack Nicklaus academy, and buggies are recommended.
Green fees run to several hundred euros in high season. Autumn and spring give the best conditions; morning rounds avoid the gusty winds that can funnel in from the Strait of Gibraltar.
