About Real Club de Golf Guadalmina

Real Club de Golf Guadalmina, often called the dean of golf in Marbella, lies on the coast just west of San Pedro de Alcántara, beside the Río Guadalmina. The Basque agronomist Norberto Goizueta bought the 400-hectare estate in 1934, and the first nine holes opened in 1959, making it the second-oldest course on the Costa del Sol. King Juan Carlos granted the royal title in 2008.

There are 45 holes. The South course, a Javier Arana design refurbished in 2002, has wide fairways winding between mature trees with little rough, white-sand bunkers and the river beside several holes; at the 11th, a par 3, the tee sits next to the beach. The North course, by Folco Nardi (1973), is more undulating, with more trees and water: the river crosses it and comes into play at the 17th, and lakes affect four holes. A nine-hole course completes the total.

The South course has staged the Spanish Ladies Open and the European Tour Qualifying School in 1995 and 1996. There is a clubhouse restaurant and a children's golf school.

October to May gives the best conditions; in summer, take an early tee time. A late round on the South course brings sunsets over the sea and views of the Sierra Blanca.

Nearby places to visit

Guadalmina has plenty of golf around it. San Pedro Golf Club (700 m) is a small municipal driving range and practice ground, and Atalaya Golf & Country Club (1 km), opened in 1968, adds two more courses just across the Estepona boundary. For the beach, Playa de Casasola (1 km) is a narrow strip of sand and gravel by the Torre de Baños watchtower, while Playa de Linda Vista (2 km), with the remains of the Vega del Mar basilica in the wood behind it, leads east to Playa de San Pedro de Alcántara (2 km), San Pedro's town beach with a promenade shaded by eucalyptus and palms.
