Ron Montero

Rum bodega in Motril founded in 1963 by a sugar-making family, the best-known producer of the Costa Tropical, with hour-long open visits Monday to Saturday for €5.

About Ron Montero

Motril grew rich on sugar cane from the Moorish period until the last sugar factories on the coast closed in recent decades, and Ron Montero was founded in 1963 by a family with a long tradition in the sugar trade. It remains the town's emblematic rum, sold across Spain and abroad. The range runs from Ron Pálido and Plata to the aged Gran Reserva and the decanter-bottled Ron Francisco Montero, plus coffee rum and guava and passion-fruit liqueurs.

The visit tells the story of the family and of rum on the Costa Tropical, explains how the rum is made and shows the bodega where it rests before bottling. It closes with a tasting of several rums. A shop sells the full range, including gift boxes and the special edition Francisco Montero, so it is a practical place to buy a bottle to take home.

Open-door visits run Monday to Saturday all year: 10:00 in French, 12:00 in Spanish and 13:00 in English, about an hour each. Entry is €5 for adults (2026) and free for under-18s and people born in or living in Motril. No booking is needed, but arrive on time as tours start on the hour; groups should contact the bodega first. Free parking, subject to space, and the visit is adapted for reduced mobility.

The bodega is closed on 1 October 2026 for a private event. Visits suit a cooler morning or a break from the beach. Tip: pair the tour with the sugar cane museum across town to see how the cane was once crushed and boiled.
