Salobreña

Salobreña's white old town climbs a rock above the sugar-cane plain of the Guadalfeo delta on the Costa Tropical, crowned by a Nasrid castle that held deposed sultans as prisoners.

About Salobreña

Salobreña's old town covers a rock that was once an island in a bay later filled by the Río Guadalfeo. Known to the Phoenicians as Sel and to the Arabs as Shalubānya, it flourished under the Nasrids, whose castle was a palace and a prison for deposed sultans such as Yusuf III. Castile took it in 1489. The historic centre is a Bien de Interés Cultural; the municipality has about 12,800 residents.

The castle crowns the rock, with walls and terraces over the delta, the sea and Sierra Nevada. Below it, the Mudéjar-style Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario overlooks the Paseo de las Flores, a cliff-edge walk. Explore La Bóveda, a vaulted passage through the old walls, the Hoyo de la Frascunda viewpoint and the small municipal history museum.

Granada is 50 minutes away via the A-44; Málaga is 1 hour 10 minutes via the A-7. Alsa buses from both stop below the old town. Park on Avenida Miguel Hernández by the town hall and walk ten minutes up, or take town bus line 1. Lanes are steep and stepped, not suitable for wheelchairs. The castle costs €4, card only, free on Monday afternoons. Allow 2–3 hours; it pairs well with a beach day.

Autumn to spring is best, with mild winters; in summer climb early or late. San Juan is celebrated around 24 June and the Virgen del Rosario around 7 October. Try chirimoya (custard apple) from the Costa Tropical, local mangoes and avocados. Late afternoon brings the best light on the rock.
