Playa Calabajío

Playa Calabajío is a short beach of dark sand and rocks on the eastern edge of Almuñécar, beyond Velilla, backed by palms and a short promenade.

About Playa Calabajío

Playa Calabajío is a short beach on the quieter eastern edge of Almuñécar, beyond Velilla, on Granada's Costa Tropical. It is short, roughly 170 to 300 metres long depending on where its ends are drawn, and about 30 metres wide. The dark sand is mixed with rocks, and palm trees and other planting line the back of the beach.

It is one of a series of small beaches in the least built-up part of the municipality, alongside Cabria, a couple of hundred metres to the west, Curumbico and Barranco de Enmedio. A short promenade runs behind it, and the large Hotel Playa Cálida stands close by, so it fills quickly, especially at weekends.

Services include toilets, showers, regular cleaning, a lifeguard team, sunbed and parasol hire, and beach bars and restaurants nearby. Access is easy on foot and signposted from the N-340, an interurban bus serves this stretch, and there is a car park with fewer than 50 spaces. The water is usually calm, which suits families and steady swimmers.

With so little parking, arrive early in the morning if you are driving in July or August. June and September are the best months: the sea is warm, and weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends.

Nearby places to visit

Right next door, Playa Cabria (200 m) is a similar small beach of gravel and rock. Heading west towards the town, Playa de Velilla (1 km) is a long Blue Flag promenade beach with plenty of beach bars and the Aquatropic water park, then come Playa Tropical (2 km) and Playa Costa Tropical (3 km) on Almuñécar's central seafront, overlooked by the Peñón del Santo. On the far side of town, Playa El Muerto (6 km) is a naturist beach with no facilities, reached on foot from Cotobro. The N-340 links them all, but Cabria and Velilla are within walking distance.
