Playa de Velilla

Playa de Velilla is the largest of Almuñécar's main beaches, about 1,470 metres of dark, coarse sand and gravel at the eastern end of the seafront, behind a palm-lined promenade.

About Playa de Velilla

Playa de Velilla is the easternmost beach of Almuñécar's built-up seafront, on Granada's Costa Tropical, running east from the town centre through the Velilla-Taramay district. At about 1,470 metres long and around 50 metres wide, it is the largest of the town's main beaches, and the hills behind this part of the coast are planted with avocado and custard-apple orchards.

The sand is dark and coarse, mixed with gravel, and the water is usually calm. This is a fully urban beach: a paved promenade lined with palms runs behind it, with beach bars and restaurants. There is an anchoring area for small boats and a marked surf zone, and in autumn and winter the occasional swell suits beginner surfers and bodyboarders.

Velilla holds the Blue Flag. In season there are lifeguards, sunbed and umbrella hire, kayak, paddleboard and sailing-boat rental, toilets, showers, a children's area and adapted access. Dogs are not allowed. There is an underground car park near the beach, and street parking along the seafront is paid in July and August, Holy Week and Christmas.

July and August are very busy, so June and September are the best months. Arrive in the morning, both for parking and because the dark sand heats up quickly.

Nearby places to visit

Velilla is the start of Almuñécar's quieter eastern coast. Playa Tropical (700 m) is the name given to the western end of this same beach. Heading east, Playa Cabria (1 km) and Playa Calabajío (1 km) are short beaches of rock, gravel and dark sand with far fewer people. Back towards the centre, Playa Puerta del Mar (2 km) is the town's main beach, with its restaurants and promenade. West of the town, Playa El Muerto (5 km) is an official naturist cove below the Peñón del Lobo, reached only on foot from Cotobro.
