Playa de Torrenueva Costa

Playa de Torrenueva is the 1.7 km urban beach of Torrenueva Costa on Granada's Costa Tropical, a dark-sand shore named after the town's restored 15-metre stone watchtower.

About Playa de Torrenueva Costa

Playa de Torrenueva is the town beach of Torrenueva Costa, on Granada's Costa Tropical a few kilometres east of the port of Motril. Part of Motril until October 2018, it is now a municipality in its own right. The beach runs for about 1,700 metres in front of it, around 30 metres wide.

Torrenueva takes its name from the Torre Vigía on the Plaza del Vigía, a round stone watchtower about 15 metres high, built to watch for pirate raids and pass warnings by fire and smoke. It later housed fishermen and farmers; it has since been restored.

This is an urban beach of dark sand with some shingle, backed by apartment blocks and a long promenade of bars and restaurants. It holds the Blue Flag, the Q for tourism quality and accessible-beach status, with lifeguards, toilets, showers, sunbed and water sports hire, a children's area and parking for over 100 cars. In summer the promenade hosts concerts and open-air cinema.

The best time to come is mid-July, for the Virgen del Carmen festivities, when a decorated fishing fleet carries the Virgin by sea, watched from the promenade. Otherwise, June and September are quieter than high summer. Arrive in the morning to find parking and space near the water.

Nearby places to visit

Motril's own beaches begin on the far side of the port, where Playa Motril (4 km) is the nearest, while Playa de Carchuna (5 km) lies to the east, beyond the Cabo Sacratif lighthouse. In Motril, the Preindustrial Sugar Cane Museum (6 km) explains the sugar-making that shaped the town's history, a good choice for a cloudy day or the hottest hours. Golfers can play Los Moriscos Club de Golf (6 km), a flat seafront links near the coast west of Motril. The N-340 links them all within minutes, so a beach morning and a museum or round of golf fit easily into one day.
