Castillo de Salobreña

Castillo de Salobreña is a Nasrid castle on the rock above Salobreña's white old town on the Costa Tropical, with fortifications recorded from the 10th century and a past as a royal prison.

About Castillo de Salobreña

The castle crowns the rock of Salobreña on the Costa Tropical, above the white lanes of the old town between the Guadalfeo delta and the sea. A fort is recorded here from the 10th century, but the present layout is Nasrid, when the castle guarded the coast and held deposed sultans and princes as prisoners. After the Christian conquest of 1489 it was strengthened. It is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural.

You pass an outer enclosure to the parade ground, walk the walls and towers of the inner alcazaba, see the old cistern and climb to terraces looking over the town, the delta fields, the beaches and, on clear days, Sierra Nevada.

Tickets cost €4, or €2 for EU over-65s, young-card holders, groups of 12 or more and other concessions, by card only; no booking is needed, and entry is free on Monday afternoons. From the last Sunday of October to 20 December it opens daily 10:00–13:00 and 16:00–17:30, and it closes only on 1 January and 25 December. Park on Avenida Miguel Hernández and walk 10 minutes up, or 15 to 20 minutes from the bus station. Allow an hour. Steep lanes and steps make it hard for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Late afternoon brings the best light, and from July to September 'Hora Dorada' sunset tours (from €12) run. There is little shade at midday.
