Playa de Valdelagrana

Playa de Valdelagrana is the town beach of El Puerto de Santa María's Valdelagrana district, 1,880 metres of fine golden sand from the Guadalete mouth, facing Cádiz across the bay.

About Playa de Valdelagrana

Playa de Valdelagrana is the town beach of the Valdelagrana district of El Puerto de Santa María, on the northern shore of the Bay of Cádiz. It runs south-east for about 1,880 metres from the mouth of the Guadalete river, about 2 km from the town centre, facing Cádiz across the bay, in front of a district of about 5,000 residents and several beachfront hotels.

The fine golden sand is 70 to 85 metres wide. The bay keeps the water calm, though the area can be windy, which suits windsurfing and sailing. Behind the sand, a promenade of more than 1.4 km is lined with beach bars and seafood restaurants.

The beach holds the Blue Flag and has lifeguards in high season, sunbed and umbrella hire, water-sports rental, toilets, showers and step-free access. Dogs are not allowed. Valdelagrana has its own Cercanías stop. Past the southern end, the sand continues as Playa de Levante, a natural beach of more than 4 km that borders Los Toruños, in the Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park, where trails cross the salt marshes.

July and August are crowded, so June and September are more comfortable. Arrive in the morning to find parking, and come back in the evening for dinner on the promenade.

Nearby places to visit

Across the mouth of the Guadalete, Playa de la Puntilla (2 km) is El Puerto's other town beach, sheltered by a long breakwater and popular for kite flying. Golfers can play the nine holes of Real Club de Golf Vista Hermosa (3 km), opened in 1975. On the western side of town, the Castillo de Santa Catalina divides the small cove of Playa de la Muralla (3 km) from the long Santa Catalina beach, whose best-known section is Playa de las Redes (5 km); both have calm water. Reaching them means crossing the river by road. Southwards, Playa de Levante (4 km) is 4.3 km of undeveloped sand inside the Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park.
