About Playa de la Barrosa
Playa de la Barrosa is Chiclana de la Frontera's main beach, a long, straight Atlantic strand south-west of the town, running from Sancti Petri to the low cliffs at El Puerco. Listed at about 4 km long and 60 m wide, it is a beach of fine golden sand backed by a promenade.
The name is known in military history: in March 1811, during the Peninsular War, British and Spanish troops fought the French at the Battle of Barrosa on the high ground near the beach. Today the beach holds the Blue Flag as well as Spain's 'Q' tourist quality mark.
There is a full range of services: lifeguards, toilets, showers, boardwalk accesses, sunbed and umbrella hire, water-sports rental, children's and sports areas and beach bars. There is wheelchair access, urban buses run from Chiclana, and the large car parks are supervised in summer. The Atlantic swell can be moderate to strong, so watch the flags.
June and September are the best months, with warm water and more space than in August, when the beach is very busy. Arrive before late morning in high summer to park, and stay for the evening: the beach faces west over the Atlantic, so sunsets are the highlight.

At the northern end, Playa de Sancti Petri (1 km) is known for windsurfing and diving, beside the channel that faces the castle on its islet. To the south, Playa del Puerco (3 km) continues La Barrosa with fewer services, sheltered by small cliffs. Across the channel in San Fernando, Punta del Boquerón y Playa del Castillo (3 km) is a sandy point within the Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park, looking towards the same castle from that shore. Inland, Sancti Petri Hills Golf (5 km) is one of Chiclana's courses. All lie within a short drive of the promenade.
