Playa de la Victoria

Playa de la Victoria is the main Atlantic beach of Cádiz, 2.8 km of fine golden sand along the modern city, named after an old local wine shop rather than a queen.

About Playa de la Victoria

Playa de la Victoria is the main Atlantic beach of Cádiz, running about 2.8 km along the modern part of the city outside the old walled town. It is an urban beach of fine golden sand, around 45 metres wide at high tide and close to 200 metres at low tide, with the Paseo Marítimo running its whole length.

The name has nothing to do with Queen Victoria Eugenia: it comes from an old local wine shop called La Victoria, which named first the neighbourhood and then the beach. Behind the promenade are the city's main beach bars, restaurants and hotels, and the sand hosts football, rugby and volleyball. In season there are lifeguards, sunbed and umbrella hire, showers and toilets, and the beach has regularly held a Blue Flag. At its southern end, a small walled outcrop is all that separates it from Cortadura at low tide.

Buses 1 and 7 run along the parallel Avenida de Andalucía, and three Cercanías stations are a few minutes' walk away.

June and September give warm water without the August crowds. Arrive in the morning, before the levante tends to pick up, or come in the late afternoon to watch the sun set beside the cathedral and the Campo del Sur.

Nearby places to visit

South of the beach, Playa de la Gamba (1 km) is a local name for a spot on the isthmus near Playa de la Cortadura (1 km), where dunes and boardwalks replace the promenade. Going north, Playa Santa María del Mar (3 km), also called the Playita de las Mujeres, is a small beach held by breakwaters at the edge of the old town. Close by, the Lithographic Workshop Museum (3 km) displays old presses and more than a thousand lithographic stones. Back towards San Fernando, Playa de El Chato (3 km) lies further down the isthmus. City buses along Avenida de Andalucía link them all.
