Playa de la Gamba

Playa de la Gamba is an unconfirmed local name for a spot on the Cádiz isthmus between Playa de la Victoria and Playa de la Cortadura, the documented beaches most visitors use.

About Playa de la Gamba

Playa de la Gamba is a name some maps give to a spot on the narrow isthmus that carries Cádiz south towards San Fernando, about 800 metres from Playa de la Cortadura and just over a kilometre from the southern end of Playa de la Victoria. The name is a local label rather than an official beach.

The documented beaches either side are what most visitors will use. La Victoria, the city's main urban beach, has 2.8 km of golden sand backed by a promenade, hotels and restaurants. Cortadura continues it southwards for 1.6 km, with dunes between the sand and the road and wooden boardwalks leading down to the beach.

Both have sunbed and umbrella hire, showers and toilets in season, and both have summer lifeguards. City bus line 7 serves La Victoria, and the Cortadura Cercanías station is a few minutes' walk from the southern end.

June and September bring warm water with more space than August. Strong levante winds can blow the sand about, so check the forecast. Come in the morning for parking, or in the late afternoon for the sunset over the Atlantic.

Nearby places to visit

Closest is Playa de la Cortadura (800 m) to the south, with its dunes and boardwalks, while Playa de la Victoria (1 km), the city's main urban beach, stretches north towards the old town. Further down the isthmus towards San Fernando are Playa de El Chato (3 km) and Playa de Torregorda (4 km), where the city gives way to a much emptier shore. At the northern end of La Victoria, the small Playa Santa María del Mar (4 km), held in place by breakwaters, sits at the edge of the old town. The promenade and the sand link all of these on foot.
