Playa de la Puntilla is the town beach of El Puerto de Santa María, at the mouth of the Guadalete river on the north side of the Bay of Cádiz. About 1.3 km long and 70 metres wide, it is separated from the river channel by a long breakwater and backed by a seafront promenade.

The breakwater shelters the water, so swimming is usually calm, but the beach catches the wind, which makes it a favourite place for flying kites, and a surf zone is marked. From the sand you look across the bay towards Cádiz, and the Puerto Sherry marina is close by.

Facilities are extensive: lifeguards, showers, toilets, beach bars, sunbed and umbrella hire, water-sports rental and a children's area, with step-free access and a large car park off the Avenida de la Bajamar. The beach has flown the Blue Flag. El Puerto's centre, with its sherry bodegas and seafood bars, is within reach on foot or by city bus.

June and September are the best months, warm but less crowded than July and August. Mornings are usually calmest, before the afternoon wind builds; kite flyers and windsurfers will prefer the breezier hours later in the day.

Nearby places to visit

Golfers have Real Club de Golf Vista Hermosa (1 km) just to the west. Across the Guadalete lies the long urban beach of Valdelagrana, with nearly 1.9 km of sand and a promenade, Playa de Valdelagrana (2 km). Westwards past Puerto Sherry, Playa de la Muralla (2 km) is a small cove between cliffs beside the Castillo de Santa Catalina, and Playa de las Redes (3 km) is on the 3 km Santa Catalina beach beyond it, looking across the Bay of Cádiz and backed by low-rise villa estates rather than tower blocks. All are a short drive or bike ride apart along the bay.
