Playa de las Redes

Playa de las Redes is a section of the 3 km Santa Catalina–Vistahermosa beach in El Puerto de Santa María, topped up in 2016 and 2017 with 80,000 cubic metres of dredged sand.

About Playa de las Redes

Playa de las Redes is on the western side of El Puerto de Santa María, on the north shore of the Bay of Cádiz, between Puerto Sherry and Fuentebravía. It is part of a long run of fine golden sand, about 3 km in all and around 40 metres wide, officially named Santa Catalina–Vistahermosa. Sections take their names from the developments behind them, such as Las Redes, El Buzo and El Ancla.

The area behind is upmarket and residential, with the Vistahermosa golf course close by. The beach has needed help to keep its sand: in 2016 and 2017 the Port Authority of the Bay of Cádiz added 80,000 cubic metres of sand dredged for the new container terminal at the Port of Cádiz, as an environmental compensation measure. A step-free access ramp was opened at the same time.

The beach is listed with a Blue Flag and has a lifeguard team, sunbed and umbrella hire, showers, toilets, water-sports rental and a large unsupervised car park. Windsurfing, kayaking and fishing are popular, and urban buses serve the area.

June and September are best; in July and August it is one of El Puerto's busiest beaches. Come in the morning, before the car parks fill.

The sand runs straight on through the El Buzo and El Ancla sections of the same long beach, where low tide uncovers a wide golden strand. Inland, Real Club de Golf Vista Hermosa (2 km) is the nine-hole club in the residential area behind the beach, opened in 1975. Towards Puerto Sherry, Playa de la Muralla (2 km) is a small cove between low cliffs beside the Castillo de Santa Catalina. Further east, Playa de la Puntilla (3 km) is El Puerto de Santa María's 1.3 km town beach at the mouth of the Guadalete, sheltered by a long breakwater. The coast road and urban buses link them all.
