About Playa del Puerco

Playa del Puerco, also called La Loma del Puerco, is a 2.1-kilometre Atlantic beach on the coast of Chiclana de la Frontera, south of La Barrosa and Novo Sancti Petri towards Conil. Golden sand about 45 metres wide faces the open ocean, with vegetation on the beach and a moderate, often breezy swell.

The name comes from the Loma, or Cerro, del Puerco, the rise above the shore. On 5 March 1811 it was the scene of the Battle of Chiclana, known in English as the Battle of Barrosa, when British and Spanish troops defeated a French force during the Peninsular War. The old Torre del Puerco watchtower still stands above the beach.

Although isolated, it is well served, with sunbed and umbrella hire, toilets, beach bars and surfing, plus a guarded car park with more than 100 spaces off the CA-9001 between Chiclana and Conil. It gets very busy in high season, and the walk down to the sand is awkward.

June and September are the best months, with fewer people. Check the tide tables, as low tide leaves much more room on the sand, and stay for the late afternoon: the beach faces south-west, so the sun sets over the Atlantic.

Nearby places to visit

Sancti Petri Hills Golf (2 km), in the Lomas de Sancti Petri behind the beach, is the nearest course. To the north, Playa de Sancti Petri (2 km) looks out to the islet of Sancti Petri and its castle, at the mouth of the channel of the same name, and Playa de la Barrosa (3 km) is Chiclana's main Blue Flag beach, around 4 km of sand with a full range of services. Inland, Golf La Estancia (3 km) and Club de Golf Campano (6 km) add two more courses. With so much golf nearby, it is easy to pair a morning round with an afternoon on the sand.
