About Playa de Levante

Playa de Levante, also known as Los Toruños, is the undeveloped southern end of El Puerto de Santa María's coastline. It runs from the last buildings of Valdelagrana to the mouth of the Río San Pedro at Punta de los Saboneses, inside the Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park. It is a wide beach of fine golden sand, about 4.3 km long and around 100 metres across.

Behind it lies the Los Toruños park, an area of dunes, salt marsh and stone pines often described as the largest metropolitan park in Andalucía. Trails cross it, including one along the old Jerez–Trocadero railway, said to be Andalucía's first line. Migrating birds rest here, and the park offers kayaking.

A few hundred metres past the last beach bar, the crowds thin out and the sand opens up. Lifeguards cover the beach in season, with a rescue boat near the river. Take care at the river mouth, where currents run strongly as the tide turns.

Visit from late May to September for swimming; spring and autumn are best for migrating birds. Come at low tide in the morning, when the beach is at its widest and the light over the bay is clear.

Nearby places to visit

North along the same shore, Playa de Valdelagrana (4 km) is the developed, promenade end of this long beach, with bars and restaurants. Across the Río San Pedro, Playa de la Cachucha (4 km) is in Puerto Real. Further north, near the town centre and the Guadalete river mouth, Playa de la Puntilla (5 km) is El Puerto's main town beach, and Playa de la Muralla (5 km) lies by Puerto Sherry. Valdelagrana's seafront makes an easy walking link between Levante and the town beaches. Golfers can play the nine holes of Real Club de Golf Vista Hermosa (6 km), a members' club opened in 1975.
