Casa Morales

Wine bar opened in 1850 by Leocadio Morales Prieto near Seville Cathedral, still run by his family, where tapas are eaten beside huge clay tinajas that once held 4,000 litres.

About Casa Morales

Leocadio Morales Prieto, great-grandfather of today's owner Reyes Morales, opened this bar and wine store in 1850. Valdepeñas wine was kept in the tinajas, cement and clay jars of about 4,000 litres each that still line the back room, used until bulk sales outside the producing region ended in the 1980s. Food arrived only in 1992, when Reyes began selling montaditos made upstairs. A later restoration added a kitchen and mahogany bar but kept the old fittings.

Chef Óscar Franco has led the kitchen since 2007. Expect montaditos (small filled rolls), espinacas con garbanzos, cured Ibérico meats, good cheeses and daily fish and meat dishes from a short, classic list. The family's Morales wines, now made in Valdepeñas, are poured by the glass alongside fino and manzanilla. Order at the counter in either room.

Open Monday to Saturday 12:30–16:00 and 20:00–00:00; closed on Sundays. Tapas cost about €3–6 (2025), and €15–25 per person covers several tapas and wine. No bookings. The tinaja room has its own door around the corner. It is 200 m from the cathedral, an easy stop between sights.

Come at 12:30 or 20:00 to find space at the bar; it fills from 14:00 and after 21:00, and is packed in Holy Week and Fair week. Ask for the tapa of the day, and look up at the old wine cooler and the loft door where bodega workers once slept.
