Corredor Verde del Guadiamar

A 64.4 km waymarked network of flat tracks on both banks of the Guadiamar between Aznalcázar and Aznalcóllar, a protected landscape rebuilt after the 1998 mine spill; free, ideal by bike.

About Corredor Verde del Guadiamar

On 25 April 1998 the tailings dam of the Aznalcóllar mine burst, sending millions of cubic metres of acidic, metal-laden water and sludge down the Guadiamar, the river that feeds the Doñana marshes. The clean-up turned the floodplain into a public corridor, declared the Paisaje Protegido Corredor Verde del Guadiamar in 2003. Replanted riverside forest now shelters otters, herons and bee-eaters.

The park's Sendero del Guadiamar totals 64.4 km of tracks on both banks, with a height range of just 7–55 m. Cyclists usually ride sections. From the Guadiamar visitor centre in Aznalcázar, a popular ride heads north past the Buitrago recreation area and the El Palmar bird hide in a former gravel pit, then the Benacazón viewpoint and the Las Doblas recreation area towards Aznalcóllar, where traces of the mine dam remain. Southwards, tracks lead to the Vado del Quema ford.

Free, no permit needed. The earth and gravel tracks suit mountain, gravel and hybrid bikes, not road bikes. There is a large car park at the northern entrance, 13 km from exit 795 of the A-66, and parking at other access points. Shade is frequent, but there is no food or water away from the towns. Low sections flood after heavy rain; turn back if fords run strongly.

Best from October to May; ride early in summer. Bring 2–3 litres of water and a puncture kit. Tip: check at the visitor centre which fords are passable.
