Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana

Family manzanilla bodega in Sanlúcar de Barrameda since 1792, run by the eighth generation, with daily glass-in-hand tours and wines drawn from the cask by venencia.

About Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana

José Pantaleón Hidalgo founded the bodega in 1792 and the family, now in its eighth generation, still owns it. Its wines come entirely from its own 120 hectares of Palomino in the El Cuadrado and Pastrana vineyards on the Balbaína and Miraflores pagos. Under DO Manzanilla-Sanlúcar de Barrameda it makes La Gitana manzanilla and the older Pastrana manzanilla pasada. It also makes Napoleón amontillado, Faraón oloroso and Wellington VORS.

The daily visit lasts about 80 minutes. After a welcome Triana spritz you walk glass in hand through patios, an 18th-century office, the cathedral bodega and the sweet-wine cellar. You taste La Gitana en rama drawn by venencia, Napoleón amontillado and a choice of oloroso or cream, with a snack and a La Gitana glass to keep. The Manzanillas and VORS visit adds La Sacristía, where wines over 50 years old age. The EntreBotas restaurant is in the bodega.

English tours run Monday to Saturday at 11:00; Spanish tours run daily at 12:00, with more slots Monday to Saturday. The daily visit costs from €20.95 (2026) and under-18s go free. The Manzanillas and VORS visit, from €74.95, runs Tuesday to Saturday and needs 48 hours' notice. Book online.

Sanlúcar is busiest in late May for the Feria de la Manzanilla and in August for the horse races on the beach. Then order La Gitana with langostinos at Bajo de Guía. Meet 10 minutes early at the La Gitana shop on Calzada Duquesa Isabel.
