Manzanilla Museum (Bodegas Barbadillo)
The Museo de la Manzanilla is the visitor centre of Bodegas Barbadillo in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, in an early 19th-century house opposite the Castillo de Santiago.
About Manzanilla Museum (Bodegas Barbadillo)
The Museo de la Manzanilla is the visitor centre of Bodegas Barbadillo, a leading wine house in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, at the mouth of the Guadalquivir in Cádiz province. It occupies an early 19th-century Andalusian house of about 800 m² around a central patio, on the corner of Calle Sevilla within the winery complex in the historic quarter, opposite the Castillo de Santiago.
The Barbadillo family settled in Sanlúcar in 1821 and first bottled its manzanilla in 1827. Manzanilla is the pale, dry wine that may only be aged in Sanlúcar, under a layer of flor yeast. The museum, on the upper floor, follows it from vineyard through ageing and bottling to sale, with a projection room; the ground floor holds the tasting area and the shop.
The museum and shop open from morning until 15:00, and museum entry is free. Guided cellar tours with a three-wine tasting last about an hour, at midday and 13:00, and an enocultural version adds the Castillo de Santiago, with an English tour at 11:00. Monday opening varies, so check the Barbadillo website and book ahead.
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking the old town. Take a late-morning tour, then head on for lunch in the centre.

Sanlúcar's own 18-hole course, Club de Campo y Golf La Luna de Doñana (3 km), is a par-72 layout on the eastern edge of town, facing Doñana across the Guadalquivir. Down the coast towards Rota, Costa Ballena Ocean Golf Club (12 km) is the course of the Costa Ballena resort, and Rota Golf Club (16 km) plays inside the Rota naval base, so it is not a normal pay-and-play venue. Playa de Punta Candor (15 km) is a dune-backed natural beach with good services. In Rota, Playa del Rompidillo (17 km) is the town beach on the Bay of Cádiz side, with calm water below the old town.
