Niebla Walls and Castle

Niebla's medieval walls run for about 2 km around the old town above the Río Tinto, with some 50 towers and five gates, and enclose the 15th-century Castillo de los Guzmanes.

About Niebla Walls and Castle

Niebla, the Roman Ilipla, was a regional capital under Moorish rule until Alfonso X captured it in 1262. Its walls, about 2 km round, are among the most complete in Spain, with 48 square towers, five rectangular ones and two octagonal towers on the east side. The gates of Sevilla, Socorro, Agua, Buey and Embarcadero still lead into the old town. The castle was rebuilt in the 15th century by the dukes of Medina Sidonia.

Inside the Castillo de los Guzmanes, two large courtyards are ringed by square towers, with the keep in the north-east corner. Themed rooms recreate the countess's chamber and the armoury, and two underground levels display more than 30 instruments of torture. The roof terraces look over the Río Tinto and the rooftops. Within the walls stands Santa María de la Granada, a former mosque.

The walls and gates can be seen free from the streets and the path outside. Castle tickets have been listed at €4.50, with discounts for students and pensioners and free entry for under-5s; check at the desk. No booking is needed. Allow an hour for the castle and another for the walls. The castle has stairs, and the torture displays may upset young children.

From 14 April to 30 September it opens 10:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 21:00, mornings only on Saturdays in July and August; otherwise daily 10:00 to 18:00.

The nearest beaches are around Mazagón, including Playa de Mazagón (29 km) and Playa de Castilla (29 km), and the vineyards of the Condado de Huelva wine region begin on Niebla's eastern edge. Below the walls, a bridge of Roman origin still crosses the Río Tinto.
