Playa de Mazagón

Playa de Mazagón is the main beach of the resort of Mazagón in Palos de la Frontera, a wide band of fine golden sand up to 9 km long, running towards Doñana.

About Playa de Mazagón

Playa de Mazagón is the main beach of the resort of Mazagón, in Palos de la Frontera on the Huelva coast. It lies on the stretch of Atlantic shore that runs south-east from the Huelva estuary towards Doñana. Fine golden sand stretches for kilometres, and the beach runs for up to 9 km, around 80 metres wide. It stays wide even at high tide.

The urban section faces Avenida de los Conquistadores, with Mazagón's marina nearby. Each 16 July, the image of the Virgen del Carmen is taken out to sea from the port by boat. Inland stands the Faro del Picacho, a lighthouse built between 1899 and 1902 that now houses a civic centre. Further east, the beach becomes wilder, backed by dunes and sandstone cliffs on the way towards Doñana and the Parador.

Facilities in the town section include lifeguards in season, beach bars, showers, toilets, sunbed hire and step-free access, with a large car park on Avenida de los Conquistadores. DAMAS buses run from Huelva.

May, June and September are the best months; July and August bring Spanish family crowds. Come in the morning, when parking is easiest, or in the late afternoon, when the sun lights the cliffs to the east.

Just east of the town, Playa Las Maravillas (1 km) has more space. Further along, Playa de Castilla (6 km) and Playa de Rompeculos (8 km) are part of the long, dune-backed coast towards Doñana; Rompeculos is quiet and used by naturists. To the west, across the estuary, Playa de Punta Umbría (11 km) is the town beach of Punta Umbría. Inland in Palos de la Frontera, the Martín Alonso Pinzón House Museum (11 km) remembers the Pinta's captain. The museum is an easy cultural stop between beach days.
