Dolmen de Soto

The Dolmen de Soto near Trigueros is a passage grave of about 3000 BC under a 60-metre mound, its 21.5-metre corridor lined with 67 stones carved with prehistoric engravings.

About Dolmen de Soto

The Dolmen de Soto lies in farmland at El Zancarrón, in the municipality of Trigueros, between Huelva and Niebla. Built around 3000 BC, it is a long passage grave beneath an earthen mound 60 metres across and 3.5 metres high. The landowner, Armando de Soto, excavated it in 1923 and found eight burials with pottery, flint knives and polished axes. It was declared a national monument in 1931.

An open forecourt leads into the covered corridor, 21.5 metres long and facing east, built from 67 upright slabs and capstones. Many are reused stones from an earlier Neolithic stone circle and carry engravings and traces of paint: daggers, axes, human figures, cup marks and serpent-like lines. A ring of stone blocks runs round the edge of the mound.

All visits must be booked in advance, via the Trigueros council website or by phone or WhatsApp on 627 940 357. Self-guided visits are free; guided visits cost €2, or €1.50 for groups, students, pensioners and the unemployed. Allow 45 minutes. Access is by a country road from the N-435, and the ground around the mound is uneven.

Visits run Tuesday to Sunday 10:30 to 13:30, plus Thursday to Sunday afternoons: 16:00 to 18:00 from mid-September to mid-May and 18:30 to 20:30 in summer. Around the equinoxes the rising sun shines down the passage.
