Bar Juan José, Huelva
Huelva bar-restaurant founded in 1976 on pedestrian Calle Villa Mundaka, whose award-winning tortilla de patatas is rated among the best in Andalucía, with fried fish and local seafood.
About Bar Juan José, Huelva
Bar Juan José opened in 1976 and is one of Huelva's references for traditional cooking. It stands on Calle Villa Mundaka, now pedestrian, with a covered terrace and several dining rooms in Andalusian style. Its tortilla de patatas has won several prizes and appears in lists of Spain's best; for many locals a tapa of it is close to a ritual.
The tortilla is thick, packed with potato and soft in the centre. Then come fried fish, a Huelva staple: boquerones, puntillitas (tiny squid), colas de gambón (prawn tails) and huevas de choco, cuttlefish roe. Atún mechado (larded tuna) comes as a tapa, and the montadito de carne mechada on bread soaked in olive oil. Seafood includes coquinas (wedge clams), gamba blanca de Huelva, sole and turbot.
Service is quick and prices moderate: €10–20 per person for tapas (2025), more for seafood. Book on +34 959 263 857 or by email. High chairs are available. The bar has closed for all of August in recent years and opening days have changed, so check first. It is a 20-minute walk from the Mercado del Carmen.
Go at 13:30 for lunch or after 20:30 for dinner, and order the tortilla first, as it can sell out. Autumn brings gurumelos, wild Sierra mushrooms, to many Huelva kitchens. A glass of Condado de Huelva white wine is the local choice with fried fish.
