Jerez Cathedral

Jerez Cathedral is the former collegiate church of San Salvador in central Jerez, built from 1695 to 1778 in Baroque and neoclassical style and raised to cathedral rank in 1980.

About Jerez Cathedral

Jerez Cathedral began life as the collegiate church of San Salvador, built between 1695 and 1778 on the site of an earlier church. The long building period shows in its mix of late Gothic structure, Baroque decoration and neoclassical finish. It became a cathedral in 1980, when the diocese of Asidonia-Jerez was created, and stands above the Plaza de la Encarnación with its bell tower set apart.

The visit follows the aisles to the presbytery and the altarpiece of the Immaculate Conception, then passes through the sacristies, the chapter house and rooms holding the treasury, silverwork and paintings. The best-known work is La Virgen Niña, a 17th-century painting of the Virgin as a girl by Francisco de Zurbarán.

Tickets cost €8 with audio guide, €7 for over-65s and €6 for students up to 25; under-12s go free. A combined ticket with the nearby church of San Miguel is €13. Entry is free on Tuesdays from 10:00 to 11:00, with limited places that must be booked online. Allow about an hour. The entrance is reached by steps, and the tower climb is temporarily suspended.

It opens Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 19:00 and Sundays 13:00 to 19:00, with last entry 45 minutes before closing. Cover shoulders and knees. Visit in the morning, then cross to the Alcázar.
