Mercado Central de Abastos, Jerez

Jerez's central market, known locally as La Plaza, is a Neoclassical hall of stone, iron and glazed tile in the old town, built in 1873–1885, with 115 stalls, 40 of them fish.

About Mercado Central de Abastos, Jerez

The market stands on land of the former San Francisco convent, taken by the city after the Mendizábal confiscations. Municipal architect José Esteve y López designed it; the first stone was laid in 1873 and it opened in April 1885. The ironwork came from Marchiennes in France, and the stone façades carry bands of glazed ceramic. The fish hall was rebuilt in 2007.

Of its 115 stalls, 43 sell fruit and vegetables, 40 fish and 15 meat, with seven recovas for poultry and eggs, olive and spice stalls, grocers, a bakery and one bar. The fish hall is the liveliest part, its counters stacked with prawns, sardines, cuttlefish and sea bream. Elsewhere you find Sierra de Cádiz cheeses, chacinas and local vegetables.

Stalls trade Monday to Saturday from about 08:00 to 14:00. The market is a five-minute walk from the Alcázar and 20 minutes on foot from the railway station; the main entrance on Calle Parada y Barreto is reached along an avenue of orange trees. Use a public car park in the centre. It suits cooks with a holiday kitchen, photographers and anyone curious about everyday Jerez.

Arrive between 09:00 and 11:00 on a weekday for the widest choice of fish; Saturday morning is busiest. Many stalls pack up after 13:00. Bring cash. There is no food court yet (one with two gastro-bars and a café was approved in September 2026), so for a sit-down tapa try the bars around Plaza Esteve.
