Tabanco San Pablo
Family tabanco in Jerez's San Miguel quarter, opened in 1934 with a lottery win and now run by the third and fourth generations, pouring sherry from the barrel with home cooking.
About Tabanco San Pablo
Manuel Muñoz Peña, remembered as el Tío Manuel, opened the tabanco in 1934 after winning 6,000 pesetas in the lottery, which paid for the bar, the barrels and the lease. After his death in 1978 his nephew Atanasio Muñoz took over, and since 1990 Atanasio's sons Jesús and Juan Manuel have run it, now helped by the fourth generation. For some years it was the only old tabanco left open in central Jerez.
The casks hold fino, amontillado, oloroso and palo cortado from Jerez bodegas, plus morenita, a mix of oloroso and moscatel. The small kitchen does home cooking: chacinas and cheese, chicharrones, papas aliñadas, ajo campero (a cold garlic and pepper dish), berza (bean and meat stew), menudo (tripe with chickpeas) and snails in season. Bottles can still be filled from the barrel.
It opens daily from 12:00 to 16:00; evening opening is not published, so check its social pages first. Most tapas cost under €4 and a light lunch is about €12–18 per person (2026). Most people stand at the bar; there is no booking. The walls carry photographs of Camarón de la Isla, Paco Cepero and bullfighters.
Weekend lunchtime from 13:00 is liveliest, when regulars come for ajo campero. Snails appear in late spring, and the bar is packed for the Christmas zambombas (flamenco carol gatherings). Tip: try the palo cortado; it costs little more than fino here.
