Bar Las Teresas
Santa Cruz tapas bar founded in 1870 as a grocery, run by the Sánchez family since 1949, where ham is carved by hand beneath a ceiling hung with more than 600 jamones a year.
About Bar Las Teresas
The bar opened in 1870 as a colmado, a grocer's selling wine and cured meats among sacks of pulses. In 1949 Plácido Sánchez Muñoz, from Salamanca, took the lease and named it after the nearby convent of Las Teresas. His son Luis Sánchez García runs it with the third generation and still visits Jabugo and Guijuelo to choose the 600 or so hams sold each year. Two extra dining rooms have opened, but the main bar is unchanged.
Ham is the reason to come: jamón ibérico cut by hand, with caña de lomo, morcón and salchichón. Fried fish includes tortillitas de camarones (shrimp fritters) and cazón en adobo (marinated dogfish); there are papas aliñás (dressed potatoes), boquerones en vinagre and stews such as espinacas con garbanzos and carrillada. On Sundays a rice with ibérico ham comes out at 13:30. Drink oloroso, fino or a cold beer.
Open daily 10:00–01:00, so it also works for a late breakfast or mid-afternoon tapa. Tapas cost about €4–5.50 (2025); a few tapas with a drink come to €20–30 per person. No bookings: tables outside and in the side rooms are first come, first served. The lane is cobbled. It is 300 m from the Alcázar.
Late morning and 17:00–20:00 are the quietest times; lunch from 14:00 and evenings from 21:00 are busy. In summer the outdoor tables are pleasant after dark. Stand at the counter if you can: watching the ham being sliced is part of the visit.
