Kayaking the Guadalquivir at Villafranca de Córdoba

Calm-water paddling on the Guadalquivir from Villafranca's municipal jetty, 25 km upstream of Córdoba, among wooded islands and the 'Little Amazon' of the Arroyo Guadatín; trips from €12.

About Kayaking the Guadalquivir at Villafranca de Córdoba

Villafranca de Córdoba lies on the Guadalquivir about 25 km upstream of Córdoba. Its municipal jetty (embarcadero), open 24 hours, has a launch platform for canoes and kayaks, making this the province's main river-paddling base. Above the weir the river is wide and slow, braided by islands and lined with poplars, willows, ash and tamarisk, with egrets, ducks, kingfishers and otters.

The council suggests four routes from the jetty. Most popular is the Isla de los Pájaros and the Arroyo Guadatín, about 6 km and 2–3 hours, entering a shaded side stream nicknamed the 'Little Amazon'. An 11 km version adds the open river to the weir, while upstream a 12 km trip reaches the neo-Mudéjar El Carpio hydroelectric station. The 14 km run downstream to Las Norias is intermediate, with small rapids.

Guadalquivir Activo (626 941 988) leads 2-hour trips in stable self-bailing kayaks from €12 and hires craft from about €15. TNT Aventura's Ruta de la Isla, a 1.5–2 hour canoe trip with a drink on an island, ran in summer 2025 at 10:00, 11:30, 19:00 and 20:30 for €15 adults and €12 children aged 5–12. You must be able to swim; trips are cancelled when the river rises after rain or dam releases.

April to June and September to October are best; in July and August the valley passes 40 °C, so take the first or sunset departure. Bring water shoes, a hat and 1.5 L of water, and binoculars for the island birds.
