Mercado de la Corredera
The Mercado de la Corredera is Córdoba's oldest food market, trading on the Plaza de la Corredera in a former prison and town hall built by Juan de Ochoa in 1583–1586.
About Mercado de la Corredera
The Mercado de la Corredera fills the ground floor of a building on the Plaza de la Corredera, the 17th-century arcaded square that is Andalucía's only Castilian-style plaza mayor. Juan de Ochoa built it in 1583–1586 as the town hall and prison; in the 1840s it became José Sánchez Peña's hat factory, hence its other name, and it has held a market since the late 19th century. It is part of the square's Bien de Interés Cultural listing.
Its 18 units ring the old arcaded courtyard under a glass skylight. Four fishmongers, stocked daily from the city's wholesale market, are the core; two butchers also sell local cheese, chorizo and ham, which they can vacuum-pack. There are greengrocers, a pickles stall with olives, a family-run spice shop, grocers, a florist and a small bar.
It opens Monday to Thursday 08:00–15:00 and Friday and Saturday 08:00–15:30, closed on Sundays and holidays. Entrances are on the square and the Plaza de las Cañas, and the aisles are step-free. It is about 10 minutes' walk north-east of the Mezquita, and suits cooks with a holiday-flat kitchen and anyone after olives, spices or ham to take home.
Come before 11:00, when the fish counters are fullest; by early afternoon stalls are clearing up. Bring cash for the smaller stalls. A refurbishment is being designed, so check before visiting from 2027.

The market is in the Axerquía, the old lower town east of the Mezquita. Just south, the Plaza del Potro holds the Museum of Fine Arts of Córdoba (200 m), and the Córdoba Archaeological Museum (350 m) lies a short walk west in a Renaissance palace. To the north, the Palacio de Viana (600 m) is known for its 12 courtyards, while the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba (650 m) and the Roman Bridge of Córdoba (750 m) are reached through the lanes towards the river. For a meal with more choice, Mercado Victoria (950 m) serves food until late on the far side of the old town.
